For the drastic cold in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a boiler furnace is ideal.
While a lot of homes in the local section are outfitted with a furnace, I am undoubtedly thankful for my hydronic alternative.
Instead of using HVAC duct to move sizzling air into the rooms of the house, the boilers links to a looping network of pipes that circulates sizzling water. The pipes are concealed beneath the floor of my Sious Falls condo & spread heat across the surface. Anything resting on the floors, including furniture & people, are warmed up & further radiate heat, and because the heat originates at floor level & rises slowly, the warmer temperatures are where they do the most nice & allow for lower temperature control settings. There are no cold spots or unpleasant temperature swings. The temperature in every corner of the room is never further than three degrees from the temperature control setting, and heating with water rather than air eliminates complications with inadequate humidity & provides a gentle genre of comfort! Eliminating HVAC duct also avoids the introduction of air contaminants such as dust, dander, pollen, mold & mildew. The closed loop of the boiler is especially quiet & clean. Because of few moving parts, boilers are undoubtedly reliable & long-lasting. The radiant floor furnace accommodates zone control. I have a temperature control in each room of the household that lets me customize settings according to occupancy & personal preference. When the temperature in Sioux Falls drops into the negative digits, the entire living space is perfectly comfortable. Plus the boiler helps to keep costs sufficient.
